Pingyao County is located in the middle of Shanxi Province, about 85 kilometers away from Taiyuan City. The County, together with Langzhong County in Sichuan Province, Lijiang City in Yunnan Province, and She County in Anhui Province, is included in the second batch of famous national historical and cultural cities and “the Four Best Preserved Ancient Cities in China.” It is also the only ancient county up to date in China that the entire city is regarded as the world cultural heritage. The majestic ancient city wall is thick and deep. Inside the city, streets, shops, and residences still maintain the traditional layout and style. The rich culture of Shanxi merchants and unsophisticated folk customs of Jinzhong give Pingyao an atmosphere of lasting tranquility and unassumingness. As the central axis of Ancient City of Pingyao, South Street runs from the junction of East Street and West Street in the north to South Gate (Yingxun Gate) in the south with ancient city buildings. It was the most prosperous high street with long-established stores and famous traditional shops on both sides. The street was reputed to be the “Wall Street in China” as over half of the national financial institutions were located here during the Qing Dynasty. Located on West Street in the Ancient City of Pingyao, Rishengchang was famed for “connecting the world” as it pioneered China’s national banking during over a century. The building adopts a triple-entry hallway courtyard with the traditional features of Jinzhong residences as well as the style of local shops.
